Apprehending the Things of Heaven
Genesis
25:34
And Jacob gave Esau bread and stew of lentils; then he
ate and drank, arose, and went his way. Thus Esau despised
his birthright.
Our
hearts need to be completely set on the spiritual treasures
of heaven. We are to let our meditation be on things above,
not on the things of the earth. There is a daily choice that
we make in choosing what we are going to pursue. Will it be
the things of this world or the things of heaven? Surely we
will possess things of this world but will they possess us?
Jesus warned that the pleasures of this life have the power
to choke out the word of God and the life truly lived from
heaven. The Lord wants our whole hearts to be set on things
above, not on the things of the earth. All of the anxieties
of this life are intimately connected with “things”
that are of earthly origin. The atmosphere of heaven brings
nothing but peace, righteousness and joy in the Holy Spirit.
This is the Kingdom of God. We need to be infatuated with
our inheritance and heritage as saints and sons of God.
Colossians
3:2
Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.
Esau
despised his birthright. This means that he “intensely”
disliked it. He did not value it. He sold it for a morsel
of food! He did not see that treasure of God that was in his
grasp and that was to be his. It is so important that we see
the immense treasure that the Lord has given us access to.
We must apprehend it with the entirety of our hearts. The
lust of the flesh is that which is infatuated with the things
of earth instead of the things of heaven. Just as lust took
Adam and Eve in the garden, it was a choice between earthly
and heavenly. You won’t pursue what you don’t
value.

John 2:15-17
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone
loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16
For all that is in the world--the lust of the flesh, the lust
of the eyes, and the pride of life--is not of the Father but
is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the
lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.
Jacob so valued the birthright of Esau that He deceived him
to get it. This is a picture of how hungry we need to be for
the Lord, things of heaven, His revealings and encounters
that He desires to give us. Half-hearted commitment will yield
half-hearted results. (Gal. 6:7) If we are only partially
committed we may make it to heaven but we will have been deceived,
robbed and plundered from the fullness that God has for us
in this life on earth. Our passion in every way should cry
for the Kingdom of Heaven to be manifest on the earth, in
our lives and in the lives of others.
Psalms
27:4
One thing I have desired of the LORD,That will I seek:
That I may dwell in the house of the LORD
All the days of my life,To behold the beauty of the LORD,
And to inquire in His temple.
Jacob
postured himself to get the birthright of Esau. He had prepared
a stew and waited for Esau to come. When Esau showed up he
already knew that he did not value the birthright and that
he could be bought. We need to be sure that we cannot be bought
for a little fleshly fulfillment. We need to be in a completely
different position. There needs to be a desperation in us
that motivates us to be ready for the divine transfer of Kingdom
blessings, revelation, impartation and encounters. God is
continually pouring out the things of His Kingdom. We just
need to be positioned to receive them.
