Apprehending the Things of Heaven
by John Belt
Genesis
25:34
And Jacob gave Esau bread and stew of lentils; then he
ate and drank, arose, and went his way. Thus Esau despised
his birthright.
Our
hearts need to be completely set on the spiritual treasures
of heaven. We are to let our meditation be on things above,
not on the things of the earth. There is a daily choice
that we make in choosing what we are going to pursue.
Will it be the things of this world or the things of heaven?
Surely we will possess things of this world but will they
possess us? Jesus warned that the pleasures of this life
have the power to choke out the word of God and the life
truly lived from heaven. The Lord wants our whole hearts
to be set on things above, not on the things of the earth.
All of the anxieties of this life are intimately connected
with “things” that are of earthly origin.
The atmosphere of heaven brings nothing but peace, righteousness
and joy in the Holy Spirit. This is the Kingdom of God.
We need to be infatuated with our inheritance and heritage
as saints and sons of God.
Colossians
3:2
Set your mind on things above, not on things on the
earth.
Esau
despised his birthright. This means that he “intensely”
disliked it. He did not value it. He sold it for a morsel
of food! He did not see that treasure of God that was
in his grasp and that was to be his. It is so important
that we see the immense treasure that the Lord has given
us access to. We must apprehend it with the entirety of
our hearts. The lust of the flesh is that which is infatuated
with the things of earth instead of the things of heaven.
Just as lust took Adam and Eve in the garden, it was a
choice between earthly and heavenly. You won’t pursue
what you don’t value . . . [more]
